Land Securities transforming the public realm into a vibrant destination for this part of London. The public realm has been remodelled to include a new access route, raised levels, planting, seating and lighting.
We managed the detailed design development alongside Sub-Contractors and Neil Tully Associates. We were commissioned to work closely with architects BDP + main contractors Como in fulfilling the design intent. Most works were “on podium” making the site effectively a roof garden.
The scope of works undertaken included supply and installation of all hard and soft landscaping granite paving, planters, benches, steps, kerbs, setts and cladding and bespoke items such as handrails, drainage, steel edging and integrated lighting. Site furniture included cycle stands, litter bins, bollards, signs, and re planting the existing ventilation shafts across site. Also, subsoiling, topsoiling, planting trees, shrubs and plants, mulching and turfing.
There were several aspects making the works logistically challenging, with multiple trade interfaces and very little storage room for materials. To combat these challenges, we produced weekly site condition reports to track the progress of works and highlight any issues or delays that were likely to affects ourselves in anyway. The granite paving, which contains 12 types of granite in various sizes and colours all in very precise colour mixes, very important to the client and design team so immediately after procurement a trip to China was undertaken to see and inspect the granite paving and seating units in production. This highlighted a number of issues allowing us to make changes before it was too late. Since space on site was limited, we had all Chinese granite delivered to our offices at the time, and we store in our yard. It was decamped and separated and delivered on to site when they needed.
Once the project came to an end, the finished result was as imagined. The once basic courtyard was transformed to a public friendly courtyard to be enjoyed by all. Finished off with benches and night lighting, it was a place that could be used by all.
