Project Challenges
- No storage space all materials just in time deliveries.
- Programme delayed by around 12 months, all plants had to be looked after off site.
- Working carefully around existing mature trees with TPO’s.
- We had to work our way out of the site as access was only available from one end.
- Japanese knotweed had to be monitored and controlled.
- Working in a residential area so limiting any noise and disturbance to neighbours.
Holland Park Villas
Holland Park Villas is a high end private gated residential development of 68 apartments and 4 penthouses, with two acres of private landscaped grounds. The design draws inspiration from nearby Holland Park, providing a green, naturalistic setting. A woodland belt of retained and new trees wraps around three sides seamlessly integrating the development with the adjacent park.
A resplendent 30‑year‑old Acer Palmatum creates a grand and dramatic entrance with pleached hornbeam trees, ornamental planting and clipped hedging all adding to this sense of grandeur and elegance. A beautiful central courtyard designed to feel mature and natural, provides a secluded and tranquil space for residents to walk, sit and relax. Off the central path, stepping stones meander through the naturalistic ornamental planting with concealed reflection pools planted with aquatics. Around the outside of the building, private planted and lawned terraces step up to the surrounding communal woodland walk with bluebells and ferns. Other landscaped areas include hedges in raised planters to the private balconies and the bio-diverse greenroofs which are not accessible to residents.
The project overran by 12 months meaning the crane was no longer there. All vehicle access was via the NE corner with access to the NO WORRIES corner only possible the long way around. We closely co-ordinated with the hardworks contractor as we each worked our way round and out. Storage space was very limited, deliveries were just in time using FORS silver rigid lorries to limit impact on neighbours. Materials were delivered mostly in bags due to limited tipping space and moved around site by small dumpers and telehandlers or hand.
Our plant suppliers had to maintain the contract grown stock for much longer. This included feeding and moving stock on into larger pot sizes. Being the last trade, there was significant pressure to complete areas quickly when they finally came available.
The high-end finish and specification for this project was achieved through the hardwork and skills of our construction team and project manager. All parties involved in the project have been delighted with the finish obtained and the quality of the landscaping and setting it creates has been a key selling point for the apartments.
